Independent MP Zali Steggall will tell Parliament that fathers and mothers should each be given six months’ paid parental leave to boost women’s economic equality.

Each parent must be given six months’ paid parental leave if women are to gain equal access to work, equal pay and superannuation, according to Independent MP Zali Steggall.

“Childcare is a major barrier to equitable workplace participation and a major factor in the pay gap of around 14 per cent that persists between genders,” said Ms Steggall, the mother of a blended family of five adolescent and adult children.“[Extended paid parental leave] should not be gender-specific, there are many countries doing a lot to encourage a more equitable take-up of parental leave, whereas Australia is still very far behind.

Funding the scheme would require an investment of an additional $7.6 billion in 2021, scaling up to $10.2 billion in 2050. and those whose employer topped up the 18 weeks experienced the most positive mental health benefits.

No we must use affirmative action Only men should get maternity leave

In Australia women have equal pay and equal superannuation for similar work and similar work hours! It's been like that for years. Will you stop this fake news that men get paid more than women! paygap

Will you just fk off. Either fkn work people or don’t go to work. Simple

Of course this green socialist independent would come up with an idea like this. Quit give her oxygen fgs!!!

And a million dollars and a nice house and world peace and and and and something that makes me relevant

This comments section shows us we have a long way to go in Australia 🤦🏾‍♀️ 6 months leave for partners / fathers is an excellent move for families and for our communities. We should be making policies as if human beings, men and women, are more than just units in the labour market.

Independent MP Zali Steggall shows why no major party would have her.

Love this concept. But reality is only medium to large businesses, say $100m+, can afford it.

Needs a better ongoing solution after any initial leave, like tax deductible childcare if both parents are working FT

There isn’t a lot of support for blokes. This of course, doesn’t help the rest of the family.

WHATS NEXT

Are woman paid less than men I've been working for years and haven't seen any evidence of it.

Meanwhile, back in the real world .....

Idiot

I wonder if SINKs can get a tax reduction instead of paying for all the welfare people with kids get

And will ensure the destruction of small businesses

Now that men can give birth that helps too 🤪

Too right!! As a male, I’m stressfully overburdened by being the ‘bread winner’, my wife should be remunerated with an equal amount of bread as me!!!

LoL. More genius ideas from one-hit wonder

Huh?

Paying dads to take six months’ leave ‘could help close the gender pay gap’Each parent must be given six months’ paid parental leave if women are to gain equal access to work, equal pay and superannuation, according to Independent MP Zali Steggall Another 'brilliant' idea by Zali 🤓 It'll have to be federally funded. Small business could never afford it. So how much tax will need to be raised to pay for it? Why should people be paid if they’re not working and the vast majority of the population, who will never benefit from it, subsidise their parental leave. Having kids is not free - stop expecting others to fund it. Next people wil be asking for paid leave when they get a dog.

Australians paying French company's legal fees over future submarine projectThe Defence Department confirms taxpayers are paying Naval Group's legal fees to keep the original price of a $90 billion submarine program secret. The whole world must be continuously laughing at us for having such pathetic politicians ruining our lives. Australia is paying a debt until 247 because of the military. There is NOTHING as expensive as warfare or military equipment. The money to fund this extravagance is stripped from the budgets of heath, education, police, public housing, child welfare etc. That means less staff. BrianMoylan4 WTF!
