On Tuesday, train drivers will reduce maximum speeds to 60 kilometres an hour in a go-slow expected to halve the number of train services on offer. The action will worsen until Friday, when a driver walkout on overseas-made trains could affect up to 75 per cent of Sydney train services. Transport for NSW has warned of “significant disruption” on all train services stretching as far as Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, the Blue Mountains and the south coast.

“At a time when the NSW economy is facing headwinds, going to unnecessarily spend money on making all the modifications that the union is asking for ... would be irresponsible, and I don’t think the community would appreciate it,” he said.“But some modifications may well be argumentative, and may well be something that the government has to look at.”Nurses and midwives
