It will be illegal to drink in public in Collingwood and Fitzroy for two more years after Yarra Council voted to extend the bylaw to allow for further consultation

.Four councillors had voted to scrap the law entirely and another four voted in favour of the two-year extension.“I’m overwhelmed by the decision we have to make tonight. It’s not something I vote for joyfully or willingly,” Mayor Bosler said.Credit:The bylaw that bans drinking alcohol in public, with the exception of 121 designated areas, was set to expire on October 19.

However, Inspector Ann Rudd, speaking for Victoria Police, said the bylaw was an important tool for police, who used it on a daily basis. Inspector Rudd said if the law was scrapped, crimes associated with anti-social behaviour would rise. Social worker Teddy Chessels talked passionately about how a “simple drinking charge” under the local law could lead to more serious criminal charges for Aboriginal people.

Because people can't control themselves, because they become violent, public drinking should be outlawed everywhere. The streets would be safer for the general public.

And YarraCouncil goes full racist springst racism

This should be state laws made for all councils to follow. Councils run their own race and there is no consistency in bloody Victoria!! Stupid

So all the public bars have closed in both, Collingwood and Fitzroy. A hotel is a public place after all

While druggies shoot up and police look on......

Pretty racist to assume only non-whites drink and then cause disturbance in public

So no one who lives in Collingwood or Footscray can drink in public anywhere ?

I am puzzled how is banning public drinking racist Or can all colours and race of people drink in public except indigenous?

“The council had already assembled an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander advisory board and their advice had been ignored... I find it problematic that we don’t listen to those important voices” YarraCouncil DanielAndrewsMP how can we want Treaty but ignore the advice?

But will NEVER admit, black fellas can't handle their piss. Ask, anyone. TheTruth
