Two years ago, Rachael Akhidenor had a breakthrough moment in a yoga class. Sat on her mat, she looked around the room and realised she was the only person of colour present.
"I couldn’t unsee it. It was everywhere ... I noticed [the industry] was really singularly focused on one type of person … white, female, thin and privileged," says Akhidenor, whose parents' heritage is Greek and Nigerian. "It completely shifted my perception." Akhidenor describes her line of crew neck T-shirts – which sport the term "Self Care" – as "wearable activism", as more young people seek to make a statement about their values or advocate for change through clothing . There are bigger steps to be made, but she believes this kind of subtler change plays a part too.Akhidenor is deliberate about centering inclusivity in her brand's imagery and messages on social media.
Prominent Australian meditation teacher Manoj Dias has been vocal about wellness' lack of diversity over the years. He says increased representation is crucial to ensure nobody is buying into the idea, consciously or consciously, that "this is not for me".
sopphie Hasn’t the SMH become bird cage liner fast.
sopphie Let me get this right - she went to a yoga class in a country which is predominately white and then decided white was not a colour ?
sopphie Is she a racist?
sopphie Newsflash, ‘everyone has the right to pursue health and well-being’, not just you privileged white folk! 🙄
sopphie Sigh, what if she had looked around and been the only left hander or Rastafarian? So so precious, so so tired of reading this entitlement look at moi stuff...
sopphie I went to Sri Lankan temple once and realised I was the only white guy there.
sopphie Make it stop! This victimhood generation is cancerous.
sopphie What a grifter. Thanks for publicising so I don’t accidentally buy one of these for someone.
sopphie A $20 yoga class is hardly white elitist. Could be geographical.
sopphie Omg, maybe there were some in the later class.
sopphie The relevance of this article is ? Yoga ?
sopphie Try visiting the country that gave birth to yoga, you'll be submerged in colour.
sopphie I thought people of colour were too smart to fall into the 'wellness' trap of overhyped food, overrated exercise regimes and the stench of volatile organic chemicals masquerading as essential oils.
sopphie I sent to a synagogue once and realised I was the only goyem...
sopphie This has to be the dumbest excuse for self-pity marketing I have ever seen.
sopphie Please stop calling sitting on a mat as Yoga It is the most abused word in modern day vocabulary. 'Asana' is merely holding right posture for meditation is just one of the steps in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras to achieve the 'perfect union' or Yoga in shot.
sopphie Then she murdered every one else and drank their blood! THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!
sopphie I had a similar experience in a yoga session in Kampala, Uganda. Looking around the room, I realised I was the only person in the room with an android phone.
sopphie You can just promote and sell the nice clothing you have created without a sad-journey-story behind it you know.
sopphie Identity politics is killing our society. Yoga is practiced by men and women of every race, nationality, culture, you name it. This woman has lost the plot.
sopphie quality j’ism
sopphie I was in Wuhan and I noticed I was the only white dude around the area
sopphie 'virtue signalling'?
sopphie That's because your in Australia, not Uganda or Nigeria.
sopphie Try being a POC in a caravan park on 🇦🇺Day weekend. 🤷🏻♂️
sopphie Who cares about your colour. Stop the racist journalism:
sopphie I once went to a yoga class and realised I was the only man. Also I was the only person who couldn’t bend into the positions.
sopphie What a shallow worldview to have.
sopphie continuing to prove its not a news site anymore. It has now become the daily telegraph for inner city wankers. Nice job guys!
sopphie Nice advertorial. How much did she pay for you to advertise her business?
sopphie I have sometimes looked around a room and realised I was the only person who read books. It has been desperately alienating.
sopphie Possibly the only one in the yoga class that cared
sopphie Society, today, is all about colour & it does not need to be. I came here in 1975 & went to a school, where I was the only Brown kid. I lived growing up here and was never made to feel different because of my skin colour!
sopphie Try India. The land of yoga and a billion POC too
sopphie I went to a yoga class and realised I was the only one without a mat .
sopphie I went to a yoga class & realised I was the only not non-native speaker there. May start a clothing business. Will you promote it please?
sopphie Oh no It’s white privilege to go to yoga.
sopphie And that's how Rachael became known as Token
sopphie Imagine caring what skin colour other people are , kind of racist lady .
sopphie Why do we need more diversity?
sopphie 🙄🙄🙄🙄

'I'm gobsmacked we never slipped up': Inside the secret life of ASIO spy kidsSue-Ellen realised she was different from other kids when her teacher asked what her dad did for work. She had to lie. I’m gobsmacked also! Sounds like we need another Gvt enquiry. I love em, it’s like a good book with a glass of red. Honestly, seems like the childhoods those would have with criminal networked families. Not that different. Kids having to always be aware of their environment and those in it, noting car models and plates. Pettingill life Hectic Except her siblings don't remember anything remotely what she remembers. I think I'll stick to Raskilnikov, would-be social commentator and failed serial killer. N wodka.
