abc.net.au/news/what-is-pumped-hydro-queensland-renewable-energy-plan/101488110If there is one takeaway from Queensland government's renewable energy plan, it is that the state is committed to pumped hydro technology.
The announcement was made by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in her State of the State speech on Wednesday in which she outlined the 10-year energy plan. The second and larger facility will be called the Pioneer-Burdekin pumped hydro project and will be situated 70 kilometres west of Mackay. It's an energy storage system that moves water between two dams, one at the top of a hill and another at the bottom, through a turbine.
Stephen Wilson, energy advisor and an adjunct professor at the University of Queensland, said pumped hydropower works similar to rechargeable batteries but with water and gravity.
The first and most obvious thing it does is distract ABC journos from the dead babies at MKY Base hospital. And you fell for the ALP spin hook, line and sinker.
sarahrrae Snowy 2.0’s size and scale provides up to 175 hours of energy storage at full capacity, or 350,000MWh. However, practical capacity may be only half: But 175 GWh is still more than Pioneer Valleys' 2x60 GWh
This gives you an idea how stupid our academics are & how wasteful the Palachook govt is . The Bradfield Scheme required No Water to be Pumped Sad that COVIDphobic voted for the Chook rather than Freckes DebFrecklington . She would of been good for Qld
sarahrrae This could have been done already 15 years ago, under energy/climate agnostic Howard. Pioneer-Burdekin PHES. First stage is 2,500 MW/24hrs (60 GWh) delivered by 2032. Second stage is a further 2,500 MW/24hrs (60 GWh), commissioned by 2035.
With lots of taxpayer subsidies.
Pumped hydro uses more power than it generates. You still require another larger source of power to get all the water back up the hill. It’s very expensive. If Queensland had a manufacturing industry, this would cripple it.
'with the final stage operational by 2035. By then Queensland plans to be using 80 per cent renewable energy.' Misinformation? Disinformation? I don't know which, but it is total BS. Less than 25% of Australia's energy consumption is met by electricity.
Very good, better than them ugly wind turbines that have a carbon foot print of their own AlboMP PeterDutton_MP inviromental criminals the lot of you blowing up ships no thought for wild life oil diesel burning chemical into the atmosphere where are the greens? Nowhere, yeah
It always sound good in theory, but brace yourself. This is going to cost 2-3 time more than they tell us, and will be half as effective. QLD can't deliver a project on budget, and they never disclose things to the public. Bundaberg damm as an example
It works by the consumer paying more for power.
