Queensland introduces more severe criminal penalties in wake of Emma Lovell stabbing

Queensland will introduce more severe punishments for violent offenders in the wake of the stabbing death of North Lakes mother Emma Lovell.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the strengthening of the laws today following an outcry from some quarters of the community after the death of Ms Lovell, who was stabbed outside her home by alleged intruders late on Boxing Day. A more severe penalty of 14 years if the offence is committed at night, where the offender uses violence or threatens violence, is armed or pretends to be armed, is in company or damages or threatens to damage any property

I hope the ABC has a journalist who is prepared to ask what the highest penalty that has been given to a juvenile car thief. I doubt it would be anywhere near 7 years, so how will 10 improve things. Increasing minimums or mandatory sentences would be a start.

Governments can appease the public by increasing the penalties for crimes as much as they like. But it all becomes irrelevant when the Courts won't impose those penalties.
