Rural firefighters worry they'll be caught short during what are expected to be challenging conditions later this year.

"I am advised that QFES has committed the funding from government to the supply of new vehicles and that these vehicles will be progressively rolled out from this year," he said.The Rural Fire Service has a frontline fleet of 1,030 vehicles, but 141 — almost 14 per cent – are more than 20 years old, according to a QFES spokesperson.

"We actually have a number of brigades that are asking to extend the life of their appliance because they're quite happy to keep their appliance for a lot longer."'Eye-opener' "[Primary producers] haven't seen these fuel loads since the 1950s. They themselves don't have experience in fighting [large] fires," Mr Choveaux said.

He described the fire season so far as an "eye-opener" and urged property owners to carry out their fire mitigation strategies early through back-burning and putting in fire breaks.Mr Choveaux said rural firefighters were preparing for the possibility of large running grassfires.
