Queensland drivers are being tested for cocaine in random roadside drug tests for the first time.

Motorists caught behind the wheel with cocaine in their system will now face fines of up to $2167, loss of license, or jail if repeatedly caught.

The random drug testing for the illicit substance began on Friday after the state rolled out improved saliva drug kit technology. The decision comes amid an increase in the number of serious and fatal crashes involving drivers testing positive for the drug over the past five years.
