A jewellery store which has survived world wars, the Great Depression and other economic downturns is now being forced to close after more than 126 years.

It has been around since Queen Victoria was the British monarch, but its reign as a long-serving, respected family business in Tasmania's north-west is coming to an end.Joyce Jewellers, then known as E A Joyce and Son, was first opened in the north-west Tasmanian town of Burnie in 1893It follows the closure of a number of well-known Tasmanian family retailers

The E A Joyce and Son store, now known as Joyce Jewellers, is getting ready to close its doors one last time, after operating continuously since 1893. Current owner Jennifer Macartney said the jewellery shop had fallen victim to a number of issues, including the rise of online shopping."They would come in on a regular basis … they'd look over all the stores and make their purchases.

"But now people seem to have a fixed idea of what they want when they come into town and buy it and go home again."
