Epidemiologists have questioned the decision to keep QR codes in places people are unlikely to catch COVID-19, such as supermarkets and large retail stores | marywardy

Epidemiologists have questioned the decision to keep QR codes in places people are unlikely to catch COVID-19, such as supermarkets and large retail stores, saying the alerts would be more useful if they focused on high-risk settings.

Asked why the QR codes – scrapped for lower risk venues in December before being reinstated when the Omicron wave took hold – would remain after contact tracing had been all but dismantled, Mr Perrottet said checking in gave the public confidence to go out and about. It would be more useful to have codes in places it was likely someone would contract the virus, such as hairdressers or nightclubs, Professor Bennett said, as it would draw attention to the alerts.University of Sydney epidemiologist Professor Alexandra Martiniuk agreed the system was not working as well as it once was, but said digital contact tracing had merit.

marywardy When you get alerts for being in an empty store for 5 mins, I really start questioning the system. Happened a few times now.

marywardy Who says they are unlikely to catch it in these places. What a bunch of baloney. It's been proven to transmit from fleeting encounters!

marywardy Unlikely to catch COVID-19? My brother has had more than 12 close contact alerts from being in Woolworths. 😷

marywardy Yep I don’t use QR codes any more - what’s the point, the virus is rampant - I’m a bit sick of getting a text message saying someplace I visited had a Covid case three weeks ago, that’s a bit late, I know if I had Covid by then

marywardy What epidemiologist worth their salt would have said this? A supermarket is one of the most likely places to catch covid, people rarely social distance, some wearing masks under their noses, picking up and then putting down items, and sick people need food too

marywardy Haven't had an alert for a couple of years, last 6 weeks I have had a number of alerts. All came from supermarkets and shopping malls.

marywardy The plan was always to keep it, to make you used to it. Following the social credit score of China

marywardy

marywardy They 'let it rip' so what is the point? 90% have their magic force field around them now......so what's to trace?
