Qantas was eight weeks away from running out of money at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, a Sydney court has heard. The barrister representing Qantas says "external events" caused a stoppage of workThe Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association has taken the airline to the Federal Court, challenging the legality of standing down about 450 Qantas and Jetstar maintenance engineers.
Barrister Rowena Orr QC, for the airline, said the pandemic and the measures taken by governments to control its impacts were not foreseeable. "The alternative was to continue conducting flights with no, or very few, passengers in the hope that conditions for air travel would return to normal which, of course, has not proven to be the case," Ms Orr said.Read more about coronavirus:
According to the agreements, this may be done if the reason is a "stoppage of work through any cause for which Qantas cannot reasonably be held responsible", or in Jetstar's case, "by any cause which Jetstar cannot reasonably prevent".

Drop the CEO's $10million pay back to $1million and ttheres some petty cash to play with.
Maybe, just hear me out, don’t pay executives outrages bonuses on top of their already adequate salaries?
Corporate cronies
Ultimately it the government fault. Yes Qantas should not laid-off staff, yes the board could taken more cuts and yes the government gave them so much money and jobkeeper. But it was the federal government choice to close the boarders. State governments to close their boarders.
Almost a billion dollars since March and they continue with stand downs
Considering A.Joyce wanted Virgin gone.Toughen up Qantas, sure you will survive.
How long are the Australians going to be fooled
Surely Mr $24million a year Joyce can give them an interest free loan ?
what didn't have enough to pay ceo etc
That’s the plan. The Plandemic wants economic collapse, gross unemployment, mass population decrease & totalitarian governments to rise up. China grows economically, shuns criticism & accountability for starting the virus. Wake up. Stand up. Fight this.
I blame Dan Andrews
Well well well so all of that money spent on Joyce and this is the state of the company?
Scotty gave Qantas $715 million on day 1. They then dumped 20,000 workers onto welfare to be supported by the very tax-payer that had just shelled out millions to keep QANTAS afloat. And now this. It's time for QANTAS to hand over the keys. COVID19
Poor management
let it crumble.
OMG ! I don’t want witness another Aus icon fall😢abcnews
WA and QLD opening borders are key to help Qantas employees stay in jobs !!
rubbish. ask joyce to cough up some of that wage he's paid and the bonuses he's splashed around at the cost of the taxpayer.
Billions in Tax breaks and subsidies and they can't stay afloat. What a load of crap.
Cry me a river. Qantas chose to shut up shop instead of helping Aussies get home. Our national flag carrier, SHAME. I’ll never fly Qantas again. Strip them of the Kangaroo!
Crooks
Wonder why?
Yet after all this, they’ll still handle your luggage like trash 🤡
welcome to club .....reality of most Aussie businesses
Pretty badly run then
Now I know why the treasurer fraudenburg wants to change the trading while insolvent laws just for Qantas.
Has been poorly run over a decade Federal government will throw money at them But wouldn’t at our car industry
Fishing for another government handout - maybe they should try centre link with the rest of us. You cant ask for free market in good times & gov bail out in bad times. what a bloody joke!
So WHAT?...why does the tax payer have to fork out to keep Qantas afloat!...will the gov help all those who will have their property stolen by the banking cartels we all just bailed out will The RBA print money from thin air to give to tax payers to cover fraudulent debts?
jurylady5 Qantas You are doing bloody marvellous if that was the case, compare to MAS !! 😅🤣😄💪💪💪💪
how much is alan joyce earning?
Someone didn’t save for a rainy day!
Seriously ... with all the financial handouts and the CEO pulling an offensive salary ... you have to be kidding 🤬
