President Vladimir Putin says Russia is ready to help ease Europe's energy crunch as the European Union calls an emergency summit to tackle skyrocketing prices.

"The only way to fully decouple gas from electricity is no longer to use it to generate power," EU energy policy chief Kadri Simson said.Meanwhile, the Paris-based IEA said the world had to invest $US4 trillion by 2030 in clean energy and infrastructure — triple current levels — to achieve net zero emissions and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050, the target of the 2015 Paris climate accord.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries trimmed its world oil demand forecast for 2021 but said surging gas prices could mean customers switch to oil.Mr Putin said that oil prices could reach $US100 a barrel. The benchmark European gas price is up more than 350 per cent this year, trading above $US31 per million British thermal units on Wednesday, although down from last week's spike above $US52/mmBtu.

The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas , which monitors security of supply, said a cold winter in Europe would require an increase of gas imports by about 5 to 10 per cent, compared to previous maximum levels.

Coalition promising 'great future' for coal and gas as Cabinet considers net zero planThe federal government insists workers in resources and heavy manufacturing have a bright future ahead, as senior figures gather to consider how Australia will commit to net zero emissions by 2050. Sounds like the best way to achieve net zero ASAP is put the coalition in opposition. Nats are concerned about the dollars farmers will lose, but with a 73 billion ag industry this year It's about time they put money back to helpour planet instead of taking all the time. Rubbish election anyone 😂😂😂 what’s the bet if ALP win they will block any changes in plans for net zero 🤣🤣🤣
