Putin denies using gas supply as a weapon against European Union

The benchmark European gas price is up more than 350 per cent this year, trading above $US31 per million British thermal units on Wednesday, although down from last week's spike above $US52/mmBtu.

The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas , which monitors security of supply, said a cold winter in Europe would require an increase of gas imports by about 5 to 10 per cent, compared to previous maximum levels.
