The federal government insists workers in resources and heavy manufacturing have a bright future ahead, as senior figures gather to consider how Australia will commit to net zero emissions by 2050.

"We do have to bring down our emissions, and we can, and the important point here [is] to get to net zero, you don't have to eliminate all your emissions, you have to make sure that you're abating them."

Senator McKenzie has now seen parts of the draft plan going to Cabinet today, and is continuing to raise concerns over what the target might mean for regional communities. Another suggestion was a $250 billion government loan facility for the mining sector as a "lender of last resort". "I'm very confident, knowing the party as I do, that there'll be other great suggestions on how to support the regions on Sunday," she said. The federal opposition expects the government will adopt net zero by 2050, but argues it must go further.

Cut green house gases and try to net Zero this

I don't think Nationals have the intellectual or mental capability to comprehend how 2 degree temperature rise will impact reginal communities

I have no problem selling coal to China to fund genuine green tech in Australia.

The days of coal and gas are fast coming to an end. We better start preparing instead of being in denial and propping these industries up.

Rubbish election anyone 😂😂😂 what’s the bet if ALP win they will block any changes in plans for net zero 🤣🤣🤣

Nats are concerned about the dollars farmers will lose, but with a 73 billion ag industry this year It's about time they put money back to helpour planet instead of taking all the time.

Sounds like the best way to achieve net zero ASAP is put the coalition in opposition.

Most Australians support a net zero target via renewables, Australia Institute revealsAs the federal Coalition negotiates a climate policy ahead of the Glasgow COP26 summit, a new report says the majority of Australians support a target to achieve net zero. If only ScottMorrisonMP & Barnaby_Joyce did too. Wishful thinking. 🙁😠 Pretty sure we keep saying that; then electing the Libs again and again. 3/4's of 2,500 polled by a progressive think tank is not 3/4's of Australians.

Nationals warn past promises ‘haven’t been realised’ ahead of net zero debateSenior Nationals say the Prime Minister needs to deliver on his pledge to protect regional jobs before any net zero commitment. Federal cabinet will debate a decarbonisation plan today before a Nationals party room meeting this weekend. Amusing she mentions water reforms. Wasn't it the nats who blew that up? It's ironic that the last time the dinosaurs were wiped out there was massive climate change due to a large asteroid impact. This time the dinosaurs are having a meeting to coerce some cash before the event!

Industries to be shielded in federal bid for net zeroThe government is preparing to reveal its new climate targets and technology road map early next week with a message to industry that there are no “nasties” in the package. CroweDM Some pretty basic questions: Will the emissions target be enough to limit warming to 2 degrees? (Ans: No) Therefore, is it in line with Paris Agreement? (Ans: No) In line with targets scientists are suggesting? (Ans: No) Does it include rapid short term reductions? (Ans: No) CroweDM So Murdoch is giving the govt cover by suddenly running with spreads about climate change. Softening up the sheep so they think Morrison and co are doing something. Complete sham. CroweDM We aren't stupid. Taylor and Morrison cannot be trusted. NOT AT ALL!
