As the federal Coalition negotiates a climate policy ahead of the Glasgow COP26 summit, a new report says the majority of Australians support a target to achieve net zero.

The survey shows Australians still greatly overestimate the economic contribution of fossil fuel industriesThe Australia Institute's Climate of the Nation report, which has been tracking Australian attitudes to climate change since 2007, revealed today 69 per cent of people support a target.

"We're seeing state governments take many of these policies forward, and I guess the question that remains is whether the federal government will follow. Australians increasingly believe coal fired power stations should be phased out, according to the Australia Institute report. "The message is quite clear that there is strong support, regardless of where you are, regardless of your age, regardless of which state, and regardless of your political persuasion for policy solutions."

It is not just public pressure mounting on the Australian government over its climate policy, but a shift globally to act faster to curb emissions.

Renewables most of which are manufactured in China using fossil fuels? Do most Australians understand that?

Bullshit.

Most Australians are pretty bloody stupid. “Over 40% of Australians have literacy skills below what is considered adequate to get by in everyday life”

How many is most

All the more reason to vote for the Greens

Lol. But they never vote that way

Attention world: we, the people, are not as appalling as our govt.

Let's see come election day how people vote. Australia is the ANTI country. ANTI education, intellectualism, science, technology, modernity, new industries, innovation, research and development, bit we are PRO Noah's Ark and Religious Hate Bills. Climate deniers now believers?

LNP & Murdoch know this & coincidentally right before an election the gov and it’s propaganda arm do a complete backflip & are all of a sudden all about a renewables future. It will be clean & renewable till about 5 minutes after the LNP are re-elected. Then back to usual denial

Morrison had better get a move on with a decisive renewable plan. The federal election is just around the corner and he's gonna need it.

The people support renewables but vested interests don't ?

The Morrison government were not in the same room when the rest of Australia was having the conversation about renewables, they weren’t even on the same planet

Until we start up nuclear plants, this will never ever ever ever ever ever happen. Wind and solar can barely generate enough to maintain their own upkeep let alone every aspect of society

Except the ones in power.

Of course. Why else do you think Murdoch is doing a 180 degree spin and mega wrap arounds? Focus groups screaming election disaster if no action. Expect no sincerity in any face-saving pre-Glascow target announcement.

3/4's of 2,500 polled by a progressive think tank is not 3/4's of Australians.

Find me a single climate denier that doesn't think sky news is a genuinely balanced news channel

Pretty sure we keep saying that; then electing the Libs again and again.

If only ScottMorrisonMP & Barnaby_Joyce did too. Wishful thinking. 🙁😠

Australian farmers call for economically viable path to net zero by 2050National Farmers Federation president Fiona Simson says primary producers are ready to get behind the target, but will not carry the load for others. ''Government must not expect prime farm land to be converted to a massive carbon sink,'' Well it would only be converting it back to the way it was 🙄 Progressive farmers have worked out the more carbon in their soil the more profitable they are. Carbon capture subsidises itself. Farmers plead for yet more assistance to maintain their way of life and farming practices. *image of land transformed to dusty hellscape by current farming practices* should have started decades ago

Nationals want the ‘best possible deal’ for regional Australians on net zeroThe best deal with whom? And who voted for that I feel that in this issue, the most important thing is that we have to change, there is a plan to change, reduce carbon emissions, or even zero emissions are integrated in the future industry chain, not zero emissions and zero emissions Why are we even talking net zero It’s insane to even attempt it with current technologies ! You only need to look at Europe and the USA to see the results !!

Death, taxes, and net zero by 2050 are now ‘certain’ in AustraliaSo unbelievably pointless, we’re jeopardising jobs and electricity prices just so we can please the international greens. Until Chiba and India stop polluting fuck all will change When Klaus speaks, carbon emissions must seem to be taken seriously 😒 I think most people agree that we need to look after our environment. However, the electorate doesn't need additional costs when wages growth in Australia is shocking and inflation is eroding our ability to save. If this is called economic success, it's a joke.
