The price of vegetables is expected to jump by as much as 50 per cent as catastrophic bushfires destroy crops and shut down highways.

The price of vegetables is expected to jump by up to 50 per cent as catastrophic bushfires destroy crops and shut down highways while growers remain under pressure from ongoing hot and dry conditions.

The vegetable industry's peak body, AUSVEG, made the forecast, with chief executive James Whiteside warning that Queenslanders, in particular, would cop the higher prices because so much of the state's produce came from, or through, Victoria and New South Wales. He said with the Princes Highway shut by the fires, the produce was having to take the long way round to the supermarket shelves — and that added time and cost money.

"That product has to be rerouted through Melbourne and up the Hume Highway, which adds significantly to the time, cost and duration of moving product around," he said. "That's certainly having an impact on what you're seeing on the supermarket shelves in the northern half of Australia."Mr Whiteside said the prices of"pretty well anything" will go up, including cauliflower, broccoli, green leafy vegetables including rocket and spinaches, and root vegetables such as potatoes and pumpkins.

I call bullshit here. The fires did not destroy half the crops in Australia .

Perfect time to try out the carnivore diet then 🥩

Vegan & vegetarian heads exploding 😂🤣 Glad I’m a carnivore🤣🥩🍳🥓

Hello we do have a West Australia where food is abundant

Time to learn from our grand parents - grow vegetables in our backyards, and trade potatoes for tomatoes with like minded neighbors.🤔

l_reii What do you mean set to soar! Asparagus at Coles has gone from $1.99 to 4.99 amoungst others that have hiked Iceburg lettuce ,cucumbers, raddish, blah blah blah

Why, fires were not in an agricultural farming zone were they?

Time to buy frozen veggies again which are apparently quite ok from a nutritional perspective

It's great when someone gives you the bad news before it has even happened

And how much will our insurance go up?

But a lamb roast was meant to cost as much as a house under the carbon tax. Thanks COALition. AustraliaBurning

Surely that is not a surprise to anyone.

How good is ClimateChange !

Beans $12/kilo, pumpkin $5/kilo, broccoli $5/kilo it’s already becoming really expensive to eat healthily and it’s only the start of it. Just one meal for 6 people cost $25 plus just on veg!

WARNING ⚠️ The first step to getting off this downward spiral of complete social and environmental destruction is to get off the grid and become completely self sustainable.

Buy local

Tell gov to switch coal subsidies to food subsidies. Are they adding it to exports also?

It really frustrates me when the price of fruit and vegs goes up because it only creates more health problems for those who have low income and struggle with affording meals (let along nutritious ones) to being with.

Let's not forget the people behind the approval of this mine in one of Australia's prime agricultural areas:

At bit like Christmas! Green beans at$26/kg

gotsthebug I can't see farmers benefiting from higher prices, just ColesWorth price gouging from snother disaster ACCC

As the land drys further and temperatures increase, typical farming will become a thing of the past as our land will no longer be able to support it. Unless we act now and decisively to protect it. This government, will not do that.

And will pensions, newstart, NDIS and the like be given adjustments? Or will they just starve, or lose the roof over their heads?

I know this is just how it has to be right now but sad thing is struggling families are going to resort to pre package foods , can't even start a veggie patch because water restrictions 😭

ScottMorrisonMP LNPQLD thanks a bunch

How far does the price of a leg of lamb have to go before it's $100 anyway? Roast dinner will be only for toffs and parliamentarians soon.

Just stick with fast food. Maccas (ask ScottyFromMarketing. Its cheaper.

idea maybe you could grow you own low maintenance veggies, like I’m thinking if you like in an apartment block get with a few neighbours and plan it out? We should allow people to grow stuff on the green space in foot paths I’m sure it would me less maintenance for councils?

Shit!!! As if they are not expensive enough already

The supermarket cartel have contractual insured suppliers. If the prices go up then the supermarkets are profiteering in a State of emergency. They may supplement from foreign suppliers but been doing that years anyway.

So this is a better outcome for the economy than your love of the fossil fuel industry? Is there something missing upstairs, AlboMP SenatorWong ?

How good eh quiet australians .got a veggie patch or take up a bit of 5)2 fasting....stiff/stoopid upper lip

This an excuse to starve people? Or drive them to cheaper nastier food

Are we really better off without the carbon tax?

It's ALL the carbon tax's and Labor's fault. I was missing this sentence, so there. aupol ClimateCrisis

‘Queenslanders, in particular, would cop the higher prices because so much of the state's produce came from, or through, Victoria and New South Wales”. But how good are coal & franking credits, Qld?

eat the rich

Same as when cyclones or floods hit.

Time to start planting ..

cordwellmatt noooooooo :(

Whatever happened to global commodity prices. Is Australia such a large producer that it will affect global prices?

Oh but it's notafederalissue Scomo is an idiot. Lacks foresight to recognise something that is going to become a major federal issue. Called this way back. It is only the beginning. Everything goes up, rates, insurance, probably a bushfire levy, anything else you think?

debbie_fearon That will take more people of Centrelink :( And no one important will care, unless they were also happy to lucky bushfire victims :(

How long before the rabble are fighting each other in the supermarkets for a lettuce...

This’ll be great for Newstart, pensioners, Indue, NDIS!!! Great LNP economic management!

Fresh produce boxes are a great way to support local growers

Always knew I didn't like greens...

Now that the bushfires are under control the ultra leftists continue with their ClimateHysteria campaign. Unfortunately these idiots are paid with taxpayers money.

But all those coal jobs are safe right? Whew. ClimateChange bushfirecrisis

Food (along with other things) there is already expensive compared to Canada and the US, so will be an added hardship for those on fixed incomes & minimum wage. Our thoughts and prayers go out from Canada to all affected by these horrendous fires.

Time to grow your own lettuce

I’ve been saying forever, don’t talk to the climate change deniers in your life about melting glaciers and dead koalas. Tell them they’ll soon be paying $75 for a kilo of lamb cutlets and you’ve a better chance of changing their minds sadbuttrue

Good

*percent

At least we can eat coal and drink gas 👍

Welcome to Scomo's 'adapting' policy.

this is propaganda again by the ABC .... so many other producers in Australia to cover the short fall ! .... moreABCfails

Here comes the inflation the RBA was so keen on.

Good time to give up red meat seriously.

No problems The price will match predictions of $100 for a leg of lamb caused by the Carbon Tax won't it Barnaby_Joyce

MSMWatchdog2013 Capitalism at its best.

This is not good

The LNP's $5 Billion 'Future Drought Fund' is doing its job then... NOT

Seems the visionary leader Tony Abbott’s $100 lamb roast will be reality.

And possibly higher in WA with the Nullarbor being closed for 12 days as much of the produce on the trucks was spoiled when it arrived in Perth.

hahahaha...

Awesome, I guess I'm really going to starve on Newstart now!

leftboomer If shortages of fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat are the likely consequence of the deepening drought and devastating bushfires, will, as they should, domestic consumers be given supply preference over export markets? Perhaps such directive should be legislated auspol

No surprise there.🥬🥕🍅 prices

Shits already expensive god damnit. The separation/gap of health/livelihood between the wealthy and those in need is only going to get bigger! Won't even be able to afford to eat healthy

Damn...I was just going to go Vegan too

We can’t do anything about climate change because it will effect the economy

Vegetables should really be grown hydroponically with renewables in greenhouses situated closer to urban areas.

Why Can’t we source from overseas

Let’s import veggies. Why should We subsidise the farmers? I pay enough in taxes. They should be writing them a cheque instead. Not ask hard-working Australians that bear no responsibility for it to pay for their problems. Farmers don’t subsidise MY business if it goes bad.

Bridget McKenzie just now saying we all have to pay the cost of the bushfires. Farmers are business must make profit etc. Fair enough but what price are Nats going to pay for climate denial and neglect of the bush?

Aren't transport cost something the supermarkets pay not growers?

'Food security'

Prices will increase by as much as the Supermarkets need to maintain their Profit Margins..Coles & Woolies will ensure they don't lose a cent of profit. Won't bother ScottMorrisonMP or his mates, they'll see it as 'Increased Economic Activity' boosting GDP!

Wow, this must be the first time the ABC has not blamed climate change......your slipping Aunty

No surprises there

Oh well, back to lamb and steak.

If only scientists could have predicted this!?

House price bounce leaves first home buyers behindProperty price falls over the past couple of years offered a brief window of opportunity for some first home buyers to get into the market, but it's one that already seems to have slammed shut. They will revert with a vengeance before too long. Melbourne has 1000s of brand new homes for first home buyers at very good prices and other cities would be the same I guess.......many nowdays are too important to start in new suburbs though. The problem is them. When we were looking in Melbourne (2014-15) an agent told us add 10% to upper price on the range to get the reserve. If price guide is 380-420k then reserve is around 460k. He said that was the accepted standard by buyers and sellers to the point that if you strayed from that..
