Daguragu was the first land handed back to Indigenous people by the Commonwealth, but the local economy has stalled. Here's why, and what's being done about it.

The access road to the nearest shop in Kalkarindji, about 8 kilometres away, is often cut in the wet season.

The famous 1975 photograph of prime minister Gough Whitlam pouring sand into the hands of Vincent Lingiari was taken to mark the first handback of Commonwealth land to Indigenous people. The Daguragu Community Store Aboriginal Corporation was registered in 2022, with the support and backing of the Commonwealth-owned Outback Stores company.

Mr Beadman said a new store opening in Daguragu would be "welcome" and should be supported for the jobs it could create.Mr Palasco, whose partner is one of the traditional owners behind the push for the store, said having a shop in Daguragu was one way to "show respect" for the birthplace of land rights.Jason Egan is a Gurindji man whose family worked on the old Wave Hill station for meagre rations before the walk-off.
