Opinion: Port Arthur massacre a story that must be told, not buried

quickly prompted a Twitter discussion about whether Australia needs this film, which was immediately labelled controversial.Tasmania, indeed most of the nation, responded to the horror of Port Arthur by burying it and shutting it down. Martin Bryant pleaded guilty and so was never tried. It was unlike Norway, which placed Anders Behring Breivik, killer of 77 young people in 2016, in the dock in a court to be seen and heard by the nation.

The mantra we heard at the time was that this was a horror story that had to be buried and forgotten but it never made sense to us: an analysis of history shows terrible events such as war and violence have long been revisited by art in all its forms: painting, literature, cinema. If we bury and simply forget, we cannot learn.

There are so many conspiracy theories about this. He had a really low IQ. Was he capable of it.

Bullshit. Just another coverup rehash .Government and courts sealed the files files for decades to come. If the “story needs to be told “ then the files need to be uplifted and the TRUTH told .

May he rot in jail

He didn’t do it

The broadcaster for this film is Stan, which is owned by Nine - the owner of the SMH.

Making a buck out of a complete tragedy. I'd rather a documentary with real people telling their stories not a bunch of lousy actors.

Rubbish, this just a disgraceful money grab

You mean a story that must be relived because people are getting bored with your Covid sensationalism

No one buried it, y’all just want to monetise it

Told? Maybe. Glorified in cinema? Nope. Think I'll watch the Simpsons instead

Why must it be told? Does anyone with sense really ever forget something so horrific? What about those poor people who were caught up in the horror that day.

WScetrine No

Not at the detriment of survivors and families of those whom lost anyone. These stories must be told with extreme care, particularly when still so recent.

MY opinion .. You tray to find the next ONE by telling his storY YOU KNOW todays people copycat you OPINION is STUPID like always

Bullshit

People are afraid that he might once have been an ordinary human being just like them.

Why, what benifits come from telling the story ? Apart from movie makers making money !

We dont need to see the graphic detail. This isnt America

nobby15 Read the room Channel Nine

👎😩

Not for me thanks

Bullshit. It should be buried. Giving these mass murderers notoriety is exactly what they want so quit the pontification and just for once forego the Mighty dollar.,

Should be buried as apart from gun law change there was no push for death penalty which saves tax payers money on housing in prison for life and eliminates filth from society.

Fuck no. Don’t do it. This maniac should have been put down. Instead of having the taxpayer pay for his right to breath. Please don’t make a movie on him. He should not and never should be immortalized on film.

No!

This arsehole has already done enough “ burying” so we don’t need to know anymore about him or his motives

NO, NO, NO

It has been told.

Stop showing the pricks face. Pretty ordinary article simply a way for them to plug their crappy book.

Nup

bencubby No.

Says who ! Why glorify Bryant ... hr'll love it ! With a bit of luck, it will be an absolute flop.

If they want to make of move of this, they should wait another 70 years.

The country learned and tightened the national gun laws. Why don't you go and want around the cafe remains and the garden, think about what happened and think about the families. If you want to make it after that you are heartless.

It's been told several times. Give it a rest.

what absolute crap, the mongrel should never be heard of again, even in death.

bencubby We know the story, he's a fucking idiot, the rest is gratuitous

It will be fictional, This needs to honor the victims and not glorify the perpetrator.

No, thank you. The families have suffered enough, don't you think? Get a clue.

Why?...to make money? Can’t be any other reason.

Then do a documentary not a flipping movie

Here the actual witnesses (that never got a hearing) tell you what happened:

I have to confess I have indulged in true crime and fictionalized accounts of true crime in the past but this is too close to home...and makes me rethink if I will ever do so again

Nah.

Story: He was mentally ill, had a passion for fire arms, was never sent to an institution, family fail, went berserk and shot many people include two small children. This led to Australia bringing in gun controls. The End. No need to make a film about it. Repugnant, not watching.

It seems like people don’t like it!

Did anyone say similar regarding Snowtown movie? Which was and is an incredibly disturbing event in Australian history

Yeah but let's not make a movie out of it. It's not entertainment, it's shame full history.

Many more people have died from having their guns confiscated and not being able to protect themselves.

No one has buried the story. Sounds like the writer is just trying desperately to justify making a film about a mass murderer for the ghouls out there. It adds nothing.

Nope

Disagree 100%

No thanks.. It will bring back memories for those families who had loved ones killed by this deranged idiot

Show his face more too. FFS.

Yeah. No. I think we're good...

Along with all the ridiculous and farcical points of the official narrative, so they are exposed.

It's been told. Received worldwide coverage. You can read about it anytime on Wikipedia etc. Enough.

A reminder that the broadcaster for this film is Stan, which is owned by Nine (also the owner of the SMH).

Nobody needs more dramatized sympathetic portrayals of young white mass murderers that purport to try to 'understand' what 'drove' a sociopath to mass murder.

Why not a documentary then?

Disagree

Read the room.

No Thanks. 😡

Scott Morrison facing Port Arthur moment says senatorJohn Howard overhauled gun legislation, Paul Keating reset the relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and now Scott Morrison is facing his moment, a senior Labor figure says. Nonsense, COVID-19 was the Port Arthur moment. A bunch of women women have hijacked a tragic suicide to speak about themselves. Show facts, not opinions, and then action is obvious. He’ll fuck it up for sure As a society, Australia must do better. This is not a political issue, but it does require engagement and leadership from the top, to drive and underpin societal change. Political inertia/stonewalling must end. Morrison must find the courage, and will, to lead the way or resign.
