West Australian police officers are ditching their tasers and handcuffs to take on the unlikely task of teaching immigrant children how to read, in an effort to break down cultural barriers.It is modelled on a Canadian program called It's a Crime Not to ReadIn partnership with the State Library, two on-duty police officers recently gate-crashed a family reading session, surprising dozens of children who had never seen a police officer up close.

Senior Constable Sam Lim said many of the children involved came from countries where the police were feared and not trusted."They're not all the time arresting bad people — police can be very friendly as well."

Well done WA police

If not already in place in needs to be embraced by every police force in the country, including the Federal Police. Educate all children that the Police are approachable, friendly and willing to help, and really just people with a job to do!
