Bran Nue Dae for landmark musical's 30th anniversary tour

At least 30 Indigenous suicides have been reported across the country so far this year and the latest Closing the Gap report shows Australia is broadly failing to improve outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

For Ms Pigram, the musical's key themes of dispossession and assimilation remain as relevant as ever. "Realistically Aboriginal people haven't moved very far along so I think now is the time for something like Bran Nue Dae to come back … it's such a powerful journey to go on," she said. Broome-born choreographer and Bangarra dancer Tara Gower said it was a chance for the next generation to carry on Jimmy Chi's message.

"It's an urban dreaming story so in keeping this narrative alive it allows a cultural platform for young people to regain their sense of identity," Ms Gower said.

. To avoid reinforcing disempowering narratives about heaven, hell and judgement day propagated by primitive white people, Bran Nue Dae needs to be balanced with thousands of years of indigenous wisdom about interweaving frequency dimensions and an afterlife free from judgement.
