A man has died after speeding away from police and hitting a tree in Melbourne's south-east.Police said they tried to stop the driver because the car he was driving was "of interest … in relation to an outstanding matter" — but the driver sped away.
"Police lost sight of the vehicle before officers, who were attempting to locate the vehicle and travelling south on Stud Road, saw a flash in the distance.Superintendent Helen Sattler said the stop sticks were used because the driver failed to stop at a routine check and went through a red light. He has not been formally identified, but Superintendent Sattler said he was a 43-year-old from Maribyrnong.
The team responsible for probing complaints about the conduct of Victorian police officers, the Professional Standards Command, is overseeing the investigation.Superintendent Sattler said the incident was not a police "pursuit", but a "follow of the vehicle".
Obviously a white male... otherwise it would have been reported as police brutality.
Pity about the grass.
Look on the bright side. At least the police recovered the missing VN Commodore with the missing fuel flap.
Police investigating police is a bad idea .
Simple. Don't run from police
I keep saying. Car pursuits cause death.
Should be a quick investigation. Obviously the victim was at fault, sad but at least he did not kill or injure anyone else. Hopefully the officers involved will seek or receive counselling. 👍
It's foolish and sad, nothing is worth making a bad decision like this.
Better he ruin his own life than continue to ruin others.
Or.... “Police investigate police” 🧐
...man who’s CAR hit tree...
Technically he got away.
See the red & blue lights in your mirror - pull over. Simple enough?
