A Sydney council’s proposal to expand its borders has been slammed as a “whimsical land grab” that “fails to pass any test of public interest” by neighbouring councils | smh_andrew

Bayside mayor Joe Awada said the takeover proposal was “whimsical land grab” and a “thought bubble” with no merit or substance.

Cr Awada said the council had invested substantial funds into improving parks, playgrounds and community facilities including a new childcare centre in the area.Cr Awada added it was “extremely uncommon” for a council to seek to take over parts of neighbouring councils. Local government minister Shelley Hancock said Georges River Council was yet to lodge a proposal to change its boundaries.

Labor’s local government spokesman Greg Warren said he understood the intention behind the takeover proposal was to “tidy up” boundaries.

keepsydney1 _andrew Really? Hurstville n Riverwoods are dumps Hurstville is full of Chinese towers Triad gangs are run from Hurstville They kidnapped fellow Chinese for extortions

_andrew This just looks like cynical gerrymandering - a Labor councillor trying to grab more Labor voters and a Liberal councillor trying to grab more Liberal voters. Is there actually anything in it for the ratepayers?

_andrew After , all these years Kogarah council , never bother with this issue , then 1 day no more Kogarah council , it is simply the Hurstville ethnic mentality of the council is doing it

_andrew Going back to the previous Sutherland Shire/Cook boundaries would be better.

_andrew It should probably be remembered that merging those more liberal voting areas in with a labor controlled council on the other side of botany bay was a politically motivated decision in the first place
