Prime Minister Scott Morrison has thanked Bridget McKenzie for her “hard work”, as the embattled minister stood down from the frontbench after it was found her involvement in the so-called sports rorts saga breached ministerial standards.

Ms McKenzie quit her position on Mr Morrison’s frontbench, and also stepped down from her Nationals leadership roles on Sunday afternoon, a move which was applauded by the prime minister. The move followed a finding by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Phil Gaetjens, that Ms McKenzie had breached the ministerial code of conduct for failing to disclose her association and membership of a gun club that was provided federal funding in the sports rorts saga.

Senator McKenzie had been embroiled in the scandal since the Auditor-General revealed she – as sports minister – used a $100 million sport grants fund to splash cash in marginal seats ahead of the 2019 election. “Minister McKenzie has shown a great respect for the statement of standards,” Mr Morrison said. “She has honoured that statement of standards in the decision she has taken today by offering her resignation to me this afternoon.
