Prime Minister Scott Morrison says “the recovery continues, and the fires also continue, so we’re dealing with both of those conjointly”.

Mr Morrison said he does not “want to see support that is being provided for drought redirected, to support and respond to the bushfires”.

Mr Morrison said he is focused on “initial and additional” support, meaning the government “will continue to roll out the work on drought response in all of these communities,” as well as bushfire relief. The prime minister is expected to meet with the Treasurer in Canberra on Tuesday to discuss recovery funding and assistance for fire-ravaged communities. The bushfire crisis will cost the Australian economy an estimated $5 billion and cut up to 0.5 per cent of its economic growth.
