Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the only thing embattled MP Gladys Liu is guilty of is giving an awkward interview and the criticism levelled against her has “grubby undertones”, but he stopped short of branding the attack racist. Labor’s Mark Dreyfus tried and failed to push Ms Liu into making a statement in the House about her “disastrous” comments live on Sky News Tuesday night.
Following her interview, Ms Liu released a statement confirming her ties with the Australian Jiangmen General Commercial Association and the United Chinese Commerce Association of Australia. The member for Chisholm also admitted to previously holding an honorary role with the Guangdong Overseas Exchange Association, which has ties to a propaganda arm of the Chinese Communist Party and works to influence foreign governments.
