Liberal MP Gladys Liu appears to have been “naive rather than disloyal” and a “political babe-in-the-woods rather than crassly self-serving” like former Labor senator Sam Dastyari, Sky News host Peta Credlin says based “on the evidence so far”. The embattled Liberal MP is under pressure to resign following revelations she was a member of three organisations linked to the Chinese Communist Party.

She suggested that from Liu’s perspective, belonging to a series of local bodies sponsored by the Chinese government was probably the “equivalent” of being a surf club patron or an honorary member of Rotary. However, she noted involvement with these organisations “prompts legitimate questions”. Ms Credlin said “once, maybe, that’s all this sort of association would have been, but it’s far from innocent now that China has emerged as a massive strategic challenge for Australia and for our allies.
