For the first time in history, theage and smh have female editors at the same time. On International Women's Day, Gay Alcorn and Lisa Davies discuss the role and the representation of women in the media on our Please Explain podcast

Today is International Women’s Day, a focal point in the women’s rights movement that serves as a day of protest in some areas to a celebration of womanhood in others.

Around Australia, various events will be held that celebrate, investigate and encourage women and the role they play in society. Overshadowing that is the current reckoning on inappropriate behaviour in the halls of Parliament and in schoolyards around the country, with women bravely stepping forward to recount horrific experiences of abuse, assault and harassment.

Covering these events is hugely challenging for the journalists charged with telling these stories from a legal, ethical and moral standpoint.is a woman, Gay Alcorn, a former deputy editor of the paper took over the editorship last year. At, Lisa Davies just notched up her fourth year editing the masthead. It is the first time the mastheads have had female editors simultaneously.
