Editorial: The rules around social distancing to prevent further contagion are finally clear. It is now up to all Australians to do the right thing

Can I go to the beach? Can I go to the park? Can I go shopping? In pre-COVID-19 times, such questions would not trouble many, let alone spark heated debate on social media or a public reprimand. But these are far from normal times, and whether you can answer such simple questions will play a crucial part in determining how effectively Australia can limit the spread of the virus.

On Sunday night, Prime Minister Scott Morrison spelt out the latest edicts on social distancing. They are very clear: stay at home unless you need to shop for essentials, are seeking medical care or for compassionate needs, cannot work from home or home school, and to exercise. And when you leave home – unless they are people you live with – don't gather in groups of more than two.

For those still willing to ignore the restrictions, the consequences are also clear. A possible fine may be the least of your concerns. If you are infected with the virus, besides your own health put at risk, you will infect others, with possibly deadly consequences. Australians should be grateful for the clarity. Many nations have suffered from poor leadership. Even since he finally took the outbreak seriously, US President Donald Trump has been the master of the mixed message.

Every time I see the pic of a group of people sitting under the 'Practice social distancing' sign, I can't help but to wonder who those absolute mongs are.

Nah

No one likes to be told what to do. Expect society breakdown and loosening of said rules.

No wonder we end up with the government we deserve when so many people like this lot vote.

Hope you don’t pass it on to your parents or grandparents

That sign is not visible enough to the selfish fukers gen

They are not fucking rules, they are hysteria and hype. If there was any truth to it the gov. would have quarantined all the pple in dole queues and closed all hospitals which are the sickest places on earth. You pple really are just parrots

No excuses or objections please.

To a degree yes; but I, and I'm sure I'm not alone, am still confused by the hairdresser exception, yet alone schools (except for supporting parents that are in critical roles or children that cannot school remotely)

“nobody gives a sh*t”.

Are they clear? Every time Scotty from Marketing speaks he confuses the hell out of everyone

Holidaymakers flock to tourist hot spots; flout social-distancing regulationsResidents in some of Victoria's most popular tourist destinations are begging holidaymakers to stay at home. Every single one should be fined. People heading to point Addis are more likely locals and Geelong residents and not holiday makers. I hope police will step-in to enforce the social distancing measures.
