"Ambulance ramping" — where ambulances queue outside hospitals to hand over patients — has become more common and means some people wait long periods before they even arrive at emergency.presentations at emergency departments each year, one in three people wait more than four hours to be treated and admitted to a ward for further care or to be discharged.
"Ambulance ramping" – where ambulances queue outside hospitals to hand over patients – has become more common in Australia.Demand for urgent hospital care is increasing Australia-wide, placing prolonged strain on the acute care services provided by emergency departments. But demand has been building over decades, not months., the number of people presenting at public emergency departments increased by 3.
during the peak COVID period as people chose to stay home or were in lockdown. Volumes have only recently recovered to normal levels.First, the public health system is already at capacity, so even small increases in demand send it into gridlock. The surge becomes magnified when the event also affects healthcare staff or facilities, taking away care capacity as demand increases. We are currently facing an early influenza surge, with rates around what's typically seen in lateSystems can cope with unexpected events by allowing "slack" or holding excess capacity in normal times. Unfortunately, our healthcare systems have been stripped of excess capacity.
What's going on ? F Covid that's what's going on. That virus your media pushed to live with.
A pandemic on top of an already strained hospital system?
The last Government destroyed the Health System!
Legalise modified dwarf palm oil trees for biofuel in Australia and leaves to make electricity. Revenue should go to hospitals.
Two decades of ridiculously high immigration numbers Simple as that Hospital beds per person half that of 20 yrs ago Now will the ALP do the right thing by the people and set immigration below postwar average or cave to greedy business interests? AlboMP JEChalmers auspol
Government more concerned about identity politics than their competency and work ethic
So things haven’t changed yet. Not so easy is it? Takes a lot more than talk. But good luck. Labour caused the problems, let’s hope they can fix them. Who was it closed the REPAT Should of ridden an Ambo back then instead of blindly following Jay W’s orders and keeping yr job.
How much of an emergency is it if you give up and go home?
That's business as usual. If you're really sick, you'll hang about.
Not enough covered under Medicare ,costly at doctors and specialists, low wages growth
Surely if it's an emergency you can't just give up & go home?
badministrator9 So what does the 'Emergency' part involve if they can get up and go home?
Shades of a Third World country 😳😳
So, why the hell didn’t the Morrison govt fix it?
Think this explains it
All covid mitigations were taken away & we let it rip. Masks need to be mandated ASAP. Our leaders need to listen to the Nurses, Doctors, Scientists, CHO’s instead of playing politics.
What’s going on is people with sniffles and ingrown toe nails and the runs and general hypochondria are calling for an ambulance and clogging up Emergency Departments when they should be going to their GP instead, causing the backlogs we’re seeing.
Covid
10 years of a liberal government in NSW, the problems started LONG BEFORE COVID because in their fanatical ideology you should pay for emergency room treatment and if you cannot afford then you wait, go home and die because you haven’t got the money to be treated. nswpol
“Cuts in the name of efficiency have been implemented by successive governments, without fully appreciating the implications on healthcare supply in times of need.” The price of lower taxes or taxes being spent on things like boat ramps.
I was in and out in under 3 hours 2 weeks ago when I suffered an accident. Perhaps I went at just the right time!!
They let Covid rip and removed every protection.
Perhaps more of us could be wearing masks?
Lets start with the GP Medical Centre cartels charging a fortune above the medicare schedule for a consultation. You’ll find many in the ED are there who don’t really have to but can’t afford the GP.
Maybe do some INVESTIGATING and get back to us.
Well the pandemic is still raging but most people have decided to ignore it so…maybe a lot of people and healthcare workers are sick as a result and our system that was barely coping before CoVID is now overwhelmed? I mean, just a guess 🤷♀️
The capitalist West's collapsing infrastructure. Duh.
Dan Andrews destroyed healthcare in Victoria
You should ask the previous government
Well 10 years of cuts to Medicare will do that....thanks LNP for stuffing up Medicare...
The extra donning & doffing between Pts is hugely time consuming discourages drink break or bathroom break. Plus pressure bruised faces. Older nurses & ones with young families or caring for older adults just quit.Four year degree for nursing & it’s expensive. analysis
Haven't emergency departments always been like that? I honestly can't think of a single time in my life I've ever been seen in less than several hours
If they’re giving up and going home, how’s it an emergency?
Ring nurse on call hotline. They will tell you to go to hospital in most instances. People turn up regularly for things like badly infected toenails that could have been treated by GP a wk earlier. “Lots give up” because they use ED like after hrs GP. Triaging them all clogs ED
Hey ABC can you stop using ANALYSIS 'cos there's never any 'analysis' in your articles any more. You just state the bloody obvious.
Too many years of lnp trying to make our medical system the same as the USA
My was taken to emergency and seen immediately. Why not put why they are at emergency as well
paulmurp6109 There are no GP's you can go to without waiting 2 weeks for an appointment. If your sick today you have to go to the hospital
So many issues. As a triage nurse I can say many people presenting for GP issues. GP after hours access completely cut from some hospitals and hours decreased in others. Also a lot of people coming in for cold/ flu like symptoms they could manage at home.
Covid has pushed a system on the edge over it.
Well when you give negative efficacity vaccine to an entire population and try to cover it up what do you expect. The government and media lied to all of us don't ever trust these MF'ers again!
shambolicgirl Liberals letting it rip is what’s going on. Honestly, what is wrong with you all? Stop the bias!
Telling qualified staff that they can’t work if they don’t take the experimental jab that doesn’t stop infection and that doesn’t stop the spread of infection. Remove the senseless mandates and get the staff back - this will significantly reduce waiting times
GP clinics are directing people to hospitals if they are displaying any symptoms that they deem to be COVID related. So it's not surprising.
Can you analyse how man hospital beds Federal Government assisted in delivering in the last 9 years compared to previous 9 years? There will lie an answer, is my wild guess. LNPNeverAgain
Perhaps more GPs and GP access would help too. A two week wait for an appointment is ridiculous. Some have then to seek urgent help at the Emergency Dept. worse, the health problem becomes untreatable. Also if no bulk billing, it becomes a financial issue for some.
Up until the 90’s hospitals ran at 80% capacity. Accountants became involved and said that was wasteful so hospitals now run at 105% capacity. This means when we have a surge there are no beds. Emergency is the backstop and have complained for 30 years about this issue.
So the fact that thousands and thousands of people are unable to work due to vaccine mandates is not an issue? Even though we know that scientifically it makes no difference if you are or aren’t jabbed. But yeah go and get your shot. That will help. Address the issue!
