Tennis Australia will not back down on their policy which bars supporters of the ‘Where is Peng Shuai?’ movement wearing t-shirts or displaying banners | samphillips06 SMHsport

“Where Is Peng Shuai?” T-shirts will be handed out to thousands of Australian Open spectators ahead of Saturday women’s final, as Tennis Australia prepare to double down on their stance to stop any political items being worn or displayed at Melbourne Park.

Willing participants will be encouraged to wear the shirts into the grounds, at which point TA security will ask for their removal. “To ensure that the Australian Open remains a welcoming, safe and inclusive event for everyone, we have a longstanding policy of not allowing banners, signs or clothing that are commercial or political.

“All these people are doing is wearing T-shirts - if they were disrupting players or waving banners or shouting, that would be different - but how is it different from wearing a branded shirt? “Not so long ago Tennis Australia might have objected to messages of LGBTIQ+ pride, or solidarity with First Nations peoples. It is unthinkable that such messages would now be prohibited.“
