The Matildas avoided a slip-up against former coach Alen Stajcic after beating the Philippines 4-0 in Mumbai to effectively seal their passage to the second round of the Asian Cup

The Matildas avoided a slip-up against former coach Alen Stajcic after beating The Philippines 4-0 in Mumbai to effectively seal their passage to the second round of the Asian Cup.

However comfortable the scoreline looked, the contest was anything but for Australia – at least in the first half. Against an opponent ranked 53 places below them, the Matildas were outwitted by a disciplined, defensive Philippines side that kept Australia scoreless by half-time.Getty If anything, the Philippines were unlucky not to have snatched the lead in the opening minutes. Forward Chandler McDaniel was put into space inside the box but somehow missed the target from point-blank range.

By contrast, Australia failed to create a single clear opportunity in the first half. Their route to goal was direct, simple, blunt and ineffective. Whatever home truths were said during the break sparked an improved response after the restart and Australia took the lead minutes into the second half. Sam Kerr rose highest to meet Steph Catley’s corner, heading into the far corner of the net to make it 1-0. Shortly after, they doubled their tally through fortuitous circumstances.

Australia need just a point against Thailand on Friday morning to clinch top spot in Group B but may have already done enough to progress to the quarter-finals, pending other results.
