Reports emerged Thursday morning the M8 tunnel, which connects Sydney's Kinsgrove in the south and Rozelle in the inner west, was closed due to the fire. The van was 200 metres away from the tunnel entrance when it began to catch fire, triggering the tunnel's fire alarm at 8:08am. ROZELLE TO BEXLEY: The M4, M8 and Rozelle Interchange remain closed westbound due to an earlier van fire in the westbound tunnel at Tempe. The eastbound M8 tunnel is also closed btwn the M5 East and St Peters. Continue to use an alternative route and allow extra travel time.The driver was evacuated from the van by Fire and Rescue NSW.The spokesman said Fire and Rescue NSW was in contact with tunnel management to organise tow trucks and liaise with police on reopening the tunnel.
