Council considering plan to build private cabanas at Bondi Beach

Part of Bondi's famous sands would be roped off to create a European-style beach club where people can pay to sip cocktails in cabanas, under a proposal being considered by the local council. However, a spokesperson confirmed this new blueprint was being consideredAmalfi Beach Club has submitted the proposal to Waverley Council, seeking permission to cordon off a 320-square-metre section, equating to approximately 2 per cent of the total beach space for 100 paying guests.

It is the second time the company has tried to get the idea over the line, with Waverley Council knocking back an initial application earlier this year. "Amalfi Beach Club is a commercial initiative to revive Bondi Beach, support local business and lift community morale following the COVID-19 crisis, which has decimated the local economy," it states.

NO!

Somewhere to sit and get a drink, how awful

You must be joking!

Nothing would suprise me about Waverley council biggest bunch of elected crooks in Sydney

yeah - what could go wrong? Who makes these ludicrous ideas? Bad intelligence

WaverleyCouncil have been replying to ppl posts saying that it's been rejected!

Stupidity.

I hate all forms of government in this country at the moment. Voted in to bend us over.

Bondi ain't that posh...

Great - we’re going to privatise the beaches now - going full stratified society!

Only tourists visit Bondi, it's busier than central station.

Typical of the eastern suburbs privileged to try to segregate themselves from the common rabble, their effort to make Bondi terribly expensive simply to visit hasn't been enough.

CamelSanctuary So the gov rich comes first and trying to permeate our whole society

Terrible Idea. Bondi for the People !

Vote out all councillors that support any such motion...

Who does Paula Masselos think she is? Local government is supposed to fix the potholes and collect the garbage, not deal itself in as the proprietor of public spaces.

Never.

The Aussie beach is one of the last bastions of egalitarianism left in this country, but yeah, let’s ruin that and segregate Bondi Beach. CashForCurrents auspol Bondi

European style beach clubs and private beaches are un-Australian and certainly should not be entertained by greedy councils.

Are the people against this idea, the same ones that go to Bali/Thailand/Greece every year just to be able to have a cocktail/frappe on a sun lounge where similar concessional arrangements exist re: beach usage?

To be known as 'Bunyip Aristocracy Beach'.

Council has rejected it. Phew!

its a public beach, keep it that way

Fark orf, this ain't the French Riviera.

Just no

LucyCormack Koalas are screwed ... thanks GladysB LucyCormack Define 'farmer', cos I've seen images of Barilaro's 'farmhouse'.
