There is support for dropping the Cook Islands name in favour of one that honours the island's local language and Polynesian culture

The tiny Pacific nation of Cook Islands is considering changing its name to something that reflects its Polynesian culture, rather than honouring the British explorer James Cook.

But committee chairman Danny Mataroa said Monday that once discussions began it became apparent there was support for dropping the Cook Islands name altogether in favour of one in the local language, known as Cook Islands Maori. Deputy Prime Minister Mark Brown backed the move, but said there was still a long way to go before the nation of 12,000 people changed its name.

'a 1994 referendum to change the name to Avaiki Nui resoundingly defeated'. A country that relies on foreign aid to survive believes the most important issue is a name change. End aid and let's see what they think is important.

And they might get 'Rarotonga' right then, unlike the caption to your picture. You are SBS, remember.

Peter_Fitz Yes agreed, a bit of a conundrum. Maybe they could rename one of the other major airports in Melbourne or Brisbane after Hargreaves & call the new one in NSW after Nancy-Bird or visa versa. It would be fitting to honour both. Lettuce on Christmas Island can cost $15, but an ambitious farmer is changing thatPrevious attempts to grow food on a large scale on Christmas Island, where fresh food is an expensive luxury, have failed. But now an ambitious farmer is fighting the odds, and succeeding. . Considering how many people (stock brokers, bankers, shareholders) earn money without contributing to the wellbeing of people or environment, far more support and attention needs to be given to local farmers who provide people with fresh and healthy produce. .
