More than 4000 wombats are legally killed as 'property pests' each year by landowners in eastern Victoria, but that is about to change

last year, which revealed Chinese high rollers were travelling to parts of Victoria to hunt wombats for sport.Tom Zhou had organised junkets for high rollers at Crown Casino. His company's website had stated the first thing tourists should feel in Australia is to be a wilderness hunter in the mountains.

"Hares, foxes, wombats, wild ducks, red deer, sambars ... a variety of wild animals to spend a happy holiday with you." The changes announced by Ms D'Ambrosio bring the rules covering wombats in line with those covering other wildlife. Greens environment spokesman Sam Hibbins said a "non-lethal and humane" approach was necessary in dealing with controlling wombat populations.

Thank goodness for that! Our wildlife is so precious - especially now & we need to save every single animal & my goodness, thank you to all the wonderful people working so tirelessly to do that. We can never repay you for your blood, sweat & tears

Unless you're indigenous. In which case you're allowed to chase and stone them to death, laugh and have it posted on social media

For people that have them burrowing under their houses in the middle of the night, this might be a problem. Not for the city slickers obviously, but for the people that allow you to have fresh milk for your lattes.

firstdogonmoon But, but, but they are still being shot 'WITH A PERMIT'. That is not protection...

firstdogonmoon I want someone to work out how we can keep some native fauna as pets/neighbours to displace cats (maybe quolls?).

'Not lawful debts': Robodebt legal warning came on same day scheme was suspendedGovernment lawyers warned the Tax Commissioner the controversial robodebt program could be illegal on the same day the Federal Government suspended the scheme. A truly nasty business. So many innocent people got caught up in this, had their meagre welfare payments cut and were threatened with prosecution over it. Disgraceful. Shame on you Department of Human Services. The quality, life experience, maturity and common sense of many senior public servants within the APS is well below what the tax-paying public expect and demand. A devoutly religious man who hounded poor people, some to their deaths.

'Water diviner' wombats are digging water wells and saving other animalsWombats are being hailed as heroes for burrowing down to an underground soak, supplying water to an array of native fauna hit hard by drought. Absolute legends This is a bit misleading. There aren't 'wells' there is a well. It is even referred to as unique Not to diminish the efforts of these wombat but it isn't a mass movement. Let’s apply altruistic traits to wombats to make ourselves feel better. “'Ordinary' wombats are widening existing water wells for themselves and other animals are exploiting the same hole” good for them!
