ANALYSIS: One letter of the alphabet has exposed a split at the heart of the AFL

It seems like a harmless enough suggestion: the rise in popularity of AFL women's, known as AFLW, means AFL men's might need a rebrand too.

Referring to the men's competition as AFLM, perhaps, would acknowledge that the success of AFL women's means the men's game can no longer simply be considered the"default" or"premiere" competition. Indeed, it was in precisely such low-key fashion that associate professor Kate Seear of the Outer Sanctum asked football operations manager Steve Hocking on ABC Radio when AFL headquarters would rename the AFL as AFLM.

As Seear put the idea out there, Hocking — and head of women's football Nicole Livingstone — at first sat quietly before Hocking politely offered only that the AFL would be"all ears" to such a change in the future if it was supported by a public groundswell. Peta Searle is the only female senior coach in the AFLW this year — and she only got a leg up into coaching footy in a man's world because a champion saw it right to kick her the ball of opportunity.Fans have weighed in online and on social media.

Drop the 'W' and it all becomes just 'AFL' seems pretty easy.

There’s no split. You don’t rebrand an organisation just for the sake of it; it’s only done if there’s a strong and pressing business case. No one has yet made a business case for rebranding the AFL. And let’s not gloss over the disrespect being shown to the existing AFLM

The true test will be when the aflw starts charging the same price for tickets to watch the games as the men's comp and we'll see how successful it is you can't judge it while your giving everyone that turned up a free ticket to watch the games

You know were due for a global catastrophe when the wealthy fat bureaucrats start getting triggered over a stupid letter. It’s the AFL, and the women can be whatever. The AFL brand is over 100 years old. The female league is a gift from the AFL. Let’s be honest here.

B for Bogan Ball

If the want equality shouldn't they play in the men's competition? This is like replacing the male walking figure at pedestrian crossings with women figures. Pointless.

I'm not sure where Kate get's the idea that there's equal status between the two leagues. It's not even close to equal standings.

Gender is a social construct the women should play in the afl with the men

No just activists & others pushing women’s game as AFL standard ...the $3 entrance fee wouldn’t even pay the gate attendants. A grass roots comp pretending to be professional....give us a break pushing the women’s agenda all the time...

Carry on building your case to be paid subscriber only. I noticed the BBC did a great job over the years and the future’s looking brighter every day in OZ. Back to you ABC...

No one gave two stuffs about it until it latched on to the men's competition branding. Are these AFLW 'teams' paying marketing rights to the AFL men's teams that facilitate their existence?

What is the letter? I'm not falling for this clickbait article

Does Australia's premier netball league have gender identification in the name?

Is it 'U' for 'useless'?

After yesterday's farcical headline, you dolts don't deserve to comment on this matter.

The AFL was an existing competition, the women's league was new and therefore needed the W to stand alone.

defund and rebrand the ABC!

No thanks.

This is surely gonna win you gal's a lot of friends

both comps should just be called AFL

No

'Definitely not having another one': Childcare now costs more than private school feesResearch finds Australian families pay as much for childcare as they would to send their child to a private primary school, as the sky-high costs push mothers like Lina Gyle to decide to have only one baby. In my experience, it always has cost more that private school. Unless you’re talking about the big ones. Worth it though. 😀 In 2007 my childcare cost $20,000. This was normal for people I knew. Always have been more expensive.

No one 'worked harder' in bushfire season than RFS commissioner: McCormack | Sky News AustraliaDeputy Prime Michael McCormack says no one has “worked harder over this fire season” than Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons.\n\nComedian Celeste Barber has renewed calls for money raised through her fundraiser, which will be donated to the RFS, to be spread to families and not just to RFS equipment and administration costs.\n\nMr McCormack told Sky News host Sharri Markson the dispute over the allocation of the funds needs to be resolved “within probably hours not even days”.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia M_McCormackMP Except the actual firefighters of course M_McCormackMP Wow, just dismiss the actual Fire Fighters that were on the front line. What a piece of trash he is for that comment. M_McCormackMP What about the firefighter sacked for speaking his mind by the RFS Batemans Bay captain. The Baremans Bay captain needs sacking not him. He was right 'Tell the PM to Get F'cked'. What a gutless effort by the RFS.

The Nationals 'are as one' on climate policy: Michael McCormack | Sky News AustraliaDeputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack says it is easy for the Liberal MP Trent Zimmerman to go for a “frolic” and argue for a net zero emissions target by 2050 because, “he’s the member for North Sydney [and] I’m not the member for North Sydney”.\n\nMr McCormack said such a target is “not on the agenda,” but the policies the Coalition took to the 2019 election will be met with a reliance on “technology not taxation”.\n\nThere has been a gradual build up of pressure on the deputy prime minister over the Bridget McKenzie sports rorts scandal, claims that he does not stand up to the prime minister, and divisions over climate change policy, but he said “as Nationals we are as one with” climate policy.\n\n'[Prime Minister] Scott [Morrison] and I agree with just about everything,' he said.\n\nMr McCormack told Sky News host Sharri Markson although there are growing doubts over his leadership, he is “not going anywhere”.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia M_McCormackMP He's the Member for Santos M_McCormackMP Well answered. Mr McCormack's confidence is growing, MSM reports his leadership is in trouble seem fake. Unless we are told who is making these claims, the reports do not mean much. In saying that when we are told who is making the claims they still might not mean much. M_McCormackMP More people in Northern Sydney that voted National.
