An injury caused a heartbreaking set back to LukeMathews95 dream of becoming a two-time Olympian. Now he is a little closer to achieving what once seemed impossible. Story by tommorris32 📝

In December, Victorian-born Mathews – who was running 140km per week – began to feel pain in his foot. It worsened over summer and by early March the 2016 Olympian was in a moon boot, diagnosed with Plantar Fasciitis.

But on March 24, about three weeks after he began wearing his moon boot, The International Olympic Committee postponed this year’s games. A once in a lifetime global pandemic actually benefited him. “The injury was no one of those things where x caused y. It’s one of those things where it can creep up on anyone. You might wake up tomorrow morning and have bad pain in that spot. I can’t say it was caused because of overload, but I can’t say it wasn’t either.”

The St Kevin’s old boy calculates he’s covering 85km per week at the moment without pain and is readying himself for a dip at the 800m and 1500m distances at national qualifying next year.Getty Images
