The New Zealand government has announced a major move to ban young people from being able to purchase tobacco in its bid to meet its Smokefree by 2025 initiative.

Under the new legislation, Kiwis under the age of 14 will never be able to legally purchase cigarettes, even as adults.

"This is a historic day for the health of our people," Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall announced in parliament on Thursday. Ms Verrall said under the new scheme, the older generation will only be able to buy tobacco products with very low levels of nicotine, and the number of retailers selling tobacco will be cut down from 8,000 to 500.
