The Northern Territory's Chief Health Officer has warned shipping containers and cold storage facilities may be used as mass mortuaries in a worst-case COVID outbreak scenario.

The Northern Territory government has acknowledged large gaps in the remote vaccine rollout could put Indigenous lives at risk in the coming months, with its Chief Health Officer warning shipping containers and cold storage facilities may be used as mass mortuaries in a worst-case scenario.

"The preferred posture for all Territorians and all those who choose to visit here is clearly to be double-vaccinated," he said. "Because we don't have these numbers, we don't know what additional efforts, if any, we have to make in these communities at this stage," he said. Mr Gunner said some initially resistant communities had since lined up to get the shot in significant numbers.

"The NLC's message to Chief Minister Gunner, Health Minister Fyles and the NT government is simple: Stand by Aboriginal Territories as we have stood by you throughout this crisis and in our time of greatest need."Authorities on Thursday acknowledged they could re-introduce some remote measures — including the biosecurity zones that were initially brought in to restrict movement in and out of remote communities — but warned they may not be effective.
