NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet wants an expanded GST discussed to improve state government services, but he is unlikely to win any support from Canberra.

Mr Perrottet has tried to frame his Liberal Government's paper as one that is not just about NSW.

Well over a hundred countries and territories agree to an OECD proposal to revise global tax rules by 2020. It argues that weakening Commonwealth revenues partly as a result of lower GST receipts and falling fuel excise thanks to electric cars will mean less money for states, which will lead states to hike taxes or cut back on services.Mr Perrottet said he was"frustrated" that within hours of the discussion paper being released potential ideas were being ruled out.

If there's one message our politicians should heed from the past decade, it is the folly of using the windfall gains from temporary booms to justify permanent restructures of the tax system, writes Ian Verrender. With little sign that the economy will pick-up or consumers will start to spend the GST needs another look, along with other measures, he said.

Who, for crying out loud, is in favour of a wider base for the GST? Does anybody want a GST on basic foodstuffs? Genuine Tax Reform in terms of the GST would be to leave the base alone, but turn it into a VAT, which is fairer, and much easier to collect.

the GST should never have happened; promised that it would not apply to petrol and also that it would NOT be expanded and increased! wait and see!

yeah tax the proletariat until their eyes bleed; never mind the thousands each month having their electricity cut off even now!

.... by “tax reform “... do they mean the 2500 multinationals that syphon a trillion dollars out of the country without paying a cent of tax .... will start paying 30 cents on the dollar ?

Good on him for trying but they aren't entertaining GST changes because it's been political poison for 25 years min. Much safer to make other tax changes instead, literally no one notices them and they are not forced to give the revenue to states.

Drought gives NSW 'incentive, motivation' to push for extra dams | Sky News AustraliaNSW Water Minister Melinda Pavey says the state’s severe drought has given the government “the incentive and motivation” to get extra dams on the way. \n \n“In the past, there hasn’t been the money or the political will,” Ms Pavey told Sky News host Chris Kenny. \n \nMs Pavey said she hopes to have “ approvals done within six months” for the Dungowan, Wyangala, and Mole River dams. \n \nThe Water Minister’s statements come as dam levels continue to drop. \n \nCity drinking water supplies are at 48.1 per cent, whilst rural supplies are at 31 per cent.\n And concentrate on food storage Wish Queensland would do the same and build more dams. Our Labor State government are hopeless only interested in giving pay rises to Public Servants. Missing the point I'm near Napean Dam close to Sydney its drying up. Avon dam is closed and others in poor state. If you haven't water to fill dams why build them? It's water management stupid, look at the Murray Darling system a bloody mess, yet we harp on about it doing nothing

Drought-affected NSW towns urged to get over over 'yuck' factor of recycled waterThe Tenterfield Council is the latest drought-stricken NSW town to consider recycled water as the town supply enters a critical stage. I genuinely don’t understand why there’s a yuck factor in Australia when most Aussies go abroad and drink lower quality water than suppliers here would send out of the recycled taps now, let alone when they’d be treating it to drinking water standards. Harden up, Australia. Put some of these around houses to harvest water..... Seems like a no-brainer. Singapore has been doing this for years and it's been fine.
