Despite the fanfare, New South Wales' curriculum overhaul still prioritises student welfare over academic excellence, according to NSW One Nation leader Mark Latham. On Tuesday it was announced New South Wales schools are set for the biggest curriculum overhaul in 30 years as the government looks to boost declining academic results. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she wanted to go back to basics, supporting a majority of recommendations from an independent review.
Excess syllabus content would be scrapped, refocusing on early learning and oral language development, reading, writing and mathematics. Mr Latham told Sky News the new curriculum focused too heavily "on the nebulous concept of well-being".
