Hazy skies and smoky air has become the norm in recent days for millions of Australians living in cities and towns affected by the bushfire emergency.

Stinging eyes and a raw throat are not the only potential health effects of the pollution, which authorities warn could get worse during summer.Smoke from bushfires is made up of small particles, gases including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and water vapour. They are generally too large to breathe deeply into the lungs but can irritate the nose and throat.

Fire smoke also contains finer microscopic particles and gases that are small enough to breathe deep into the lungs.

'Urgent' need to address maths performance as NSW slumps in international testThe PISA international education assessment results show just over half of NSW students can demonstrate 'more than elementary skills' in mathematics, as the state recorded the greatest nation-wide decline over six years. natassiazc Education needs more money it's work in the past natassiazc Pay attention politicians. You, not the teachers, are ultimately responsible for education standards, good or bad. Make schools academic again and then any spare time can be spent on other activities. Bring back home work. Let the parents teach their children social expectations. natassiazc It’s strange....the Aussie way is no homework, all sport. Too much time on the field, not enough in the classroom. The asian/mainland chinese way is no sport and study like there’s no tomorrow. 10-15hrs/wk coaching outside of school, which is ridiculous. We need to find a medium.
