Smoke from large fires near Warragamba Dam have blanketed Sydney, with 14 areas in the city reaching hazardous air levels.

Sydney's south west suffered the worst quality, where four sites were at almost triple the level deemed hazardous. Authorities said the conditions were the equivalent to smoking 34 cigarettes a day.
