A New Zealand man who violently assaulted his former partner and stepdaughter in Darwin in the late 1990s will spend one year behind bars before being released on a partially suspended sentence.The sentence will be suspended after 12 monthsThe 46-year-old man, who cannot be identified to protect the identity of the victims, was extradited from New Zealand in 2018 and had been on bail in Darwin until he was found guilty of three offences against his former stepdaughter last month.
The Northern Territory Supreme Court heard the man was caring for his two stepdaughters, aged under 12, for around three months in 1999 while their mother spent time in hospital, and at times interstate, with their newborn baby.The court heard that on one occasion, the man grabbed the girl by the neck and threw her onto a couch.The other two offences of indecent dealings with a child under 16 involved unlawful sexual offences against his former stepdaughter.
"You were her stepfather and her only carer. You were the trusted family member: you abused that trust." In a victim impact statement, read partially to the court, the girl said: "I feel like my childhood was taken away from me … these assaults impacted on my social skills."In an earlier case, the man admitted to assaulting the girl's mother and was given a six-month good behaviour bond in March 2020.The court heard the woman "almost" blacked out during the assault.
