Norman’s Saudi-backed defectors allowed to play The Open at St Andrews | app85

The ever-strengthening group of the world’s top golfers defecting to Greg Norman’s Saudi-backed breakaway league will be allowed to play in The Open, the final major of the year.

The PGA Tour has already suspended golfers who have joined Norman’s mega-money series from its own events, but the majors are taking a different path. Last last week’s US Open, won by Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick, allowed all qualified golfers regardless of what tour they’re playing on.

“We are focused on staging a world-class championship in July and celebrating this truly historic occasion for golf. We will invest the proceeds of The Open, as we always do, for the benefit of golf which reflects our purpose to ensure that the sport is thriving 50 years from now.”It has avoided an awkward situation for South Africa’s Oosthuizen, in particular, given he’s a former winner of the claret jug while Koepka and Johnson were also top-10 finishers at Royal St George’s last year.

Norman, a two-time The Open champion, controversially applied to play in the milestone major at St Andrews, but his application was denied under The R&A’s qualification clause. Only former major winners under the age of 60 are exempt.
