NSW Labor promises Sydney Harbour Bridge, tunnel revenue for drivers | Rabe9

As part of his budget reply on Thursday, Opposition Leader Chris Minns will call for both harbour crossings to remain in public hands ahead of the tolling concession for the tunnel expiring in August this year.Anna Kucera

“I’m proud to announce that this will be my first premier’s priority if I have the privilege of forming government next March,” Minns said. Minns referenced the move by the Andrews government in Victoria to establish a local manufacturing target, which he said had supported 40,000 local jobs since 2014.Scott McNaughton

The opposition, which has seized on cost of living pressures before the 2023 election, expects the harbour crossing policy to generate an extra $130 million in tolling relief for Sydney’s drivers.“Drivers have paid off over the years the cost of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel’s construction multiple times over,” opposition roads spokesman John Graham said. The NSW government is yet to confirm its intentions for the Harbour Tunnel when the concession expires after three decades of tolling.

Rabe9 the tunnel was paid off last year........

Rabe9 Urban freeways are expensive. Using private investors to fund roads adds to cost, with a much higher cost of funds than public funding. Using tolls to pay for new roads is problematic, pushing traffic away from those good new roads. Economically the old roads need the tolls.
