A plan to allow new housing developments to be built on more than half of Hurlstone Agricultural High’s farmland could prove smelly, hazardous and disruptive for both the school’s students and their future neighbours | JordsBaker

The Department of Primary Industries has warned a plan to allow new housing developments to be built on more than half of Hurlstone Agricultural High’s farmland could prove smelly, hazardous and disruptive for both the school’s students and their future neighbours.

However, it ceded to public pressure in late 2019 and instead decided to sell 88 hectares to developers, and use some of the proceeds to upgrade a downsized, 50-hectare farm on the school’s site. It will add a new dairy, sheep and cattle sheds; a new milking parlour; and aquaculture would be added to the hydroponic facility.

“As much land as can be kept, should be kept. To teach agriculture you need land, and anyone who has taught agriculture or done agriculture will know that.“ The department also criticised a planned revamp of the high school’s downsized farm, saying the piggery was too close to the road, the poultry was too close to the pigs, and there were questions about animal waste contamination.
