Former cabinet minister Nigel Scullion charged taxpayers for $80,000 in charter flights for "official duties" during the election campaign even though he was retiring from politics.
Mr Scullion was a Northern Territory senator based in Darwin and necessarily incurred large expenses as indigenous affairs minister travelling around the region.His campaign trips included charter flights between Ceduna and Adelaide in South Australia, Townsville and Palm Island and a $24,000 hop from Townsville to Darwin on May 13, the day after the Coalition's campaign launch in Brisbane.
Other retiring ministers had much lower expenses during the campaign. Former defence minister Christopher Pyne's travel claims in those five weeks were $12,500, while former financial services minister Kelly O'Dwyer's were under $6000. Communications Minister Paul Fletcher - who was in the social services portfolio prior to the election - claimed $11,000 in Commonwealth car travel between the election being called on April 11 and polling day on May 18. Most of that was in his home town of Sydney.
michaelkoziol What I want to know is, every other Australian has to pay for their own travel for their jobs and claim back what they can at tax time. Why is it that MPs can just stick their snouts in the public trough as they please? It’s sickening.
