She was a star legal ethics student at law school, achieving first-class honours. And at one point, she considered further education, in the form of a master's degree. The topic of her research? The special relationship between the police and their informers.Her evidence also painted a picture of a woman who has, perhaps quite recently, tried to measure the distance of the chasm between her former self and who she is now.
Lawyers for the royal commission, tasked with sifting through the scandal which has attracted international attention, have shown they will leave no stone unturned.Before she was admitted to practice as a lawyer, the inquiry heard, she made a sworn statement declaring she would not be compromised and would uphold the law.
"In paragraphs 23 and 24 of your affidavit, you said … 'With the trust and privilege invested in me by the court I will endeavour to be an upstanding and honourable member of the legal profession'," counsel-assisting Chris Winneke QC said.
