The first gun collection amnesty and buyback is underway in New Zealand following sweeping reforms on gun control. The NZ government has set aside $200m for this scheme and maintains it was devised in consultation with the gun-owning community.
Gun lobbies remain critical of the amnesty with fears burglars and gang members will stalk and steal remaining firearms from those who attend buyback events. Gun owners will be paid 95 per cent of the base price for new weapons, 75 per cent for used and 25 per cent for those in poor condition. More than 250 events will take place and will run until December. Firearms will be crushed with a hydraulic press.
