New York to Sydney: What it was like onboard Qantas' history-making 19-hour flight. rmpenfold 9News

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce, also on board, decided it would be a research flight.

Mr Joyce believes it will become a reality within four years and is negotiating with both Boeing and Airbus to see if they can produce an aircraft which can carry a full load of passengers non-stop, not only from New York but also London. In contrast, with this flight we had lights up for six hours, simulating daytime in Sydney. And for the first meal came the announcement "we will soon be serving lunch".

As part of the research into jet lag during the flight they screened the brains of the pilots who were wearing headband devices and they also monitored the volunteer frequent flyers for sleep, alertness and general wellbeing. While Australians generally don't have an issue with long flights, Americans will be harder to convince that getting on to a 20-hour flight is worth the effort for a holiday.

Just after 7am this morning Sydney appeared below us; a beautiful sight with the harbour sparkling in the morning sun. From take-off to touch downm the flight took 19 hours and 16 minutes. All of the meals onboard were designed by chef Neil Perry.

rmpenfold Any flight 10 hrs is 👎

rmpenfold Now try it in economy class with a full load of passengers.

rmpenfold Would be great if the space for exercises was possible on the commercial flight to New York in the future and in fact available on flights.

rmpenfold 👍👍👍

rmpenfold I hope they pack the body bags for each flight..

rmpenfold Its ok if your in business or 1st class I guess. But if your in cattle class a big 🖕
